History Circa 1996

(Courtesy of Leah Roberts and Elizabeth 'B' Schlaeger)

We were the Memphis Blues - this was back when the men's team went by "Old No. 7". That's right, they stole our name!

Began, I believe in the Fall of '96. For us, it all began as a bunch of gals standing on the side lines getting drunk and grunting, in my best Judy Tenuta - "WE COULD DO THAT!". Recruits ended up being mostly former soccer women or women who were dating other rugby players. Ads said, "Ain't nothing like a woman's touch"

Dana Sommer, from Nashville's team, would come to coach when she could. There was also another coach named Dwight James. (Thanks for the new info Dwight!)  The ladies didn't win much but really enjoyed themselves.

A lot of times, when only the hard core gals would show up and we didn't have enough people, we'd practice with the men of Dry Gulch.

First tourny - Sweats Sevens. Pictures are from our first tourny in Little Rock - got the snot beat out of but earned some respect with the gals from NOLA cuz by the time we played them, we were beat and still pushin'.

Jerseys were borrowed from New Orleans, or maybe Vanderbilt.

Team only lasted 2 yrs. and then fell apart because no one would take the reins to organize.
