Wanna Play?

Women's rugby is one of the fastest growing sports in America. Our team has grown tremendously since its birth in 2004, and we're still growing! Several Memphis area high school teams have started, and the University of Memphis hopes to form a women's team soon. To support this growth, we're always on the lookout for new players. Whether you're new, or an experienced rugger, this page will have all the info you need to get started.

Step 1: Download our Welcome Packet. Inside, you find a brief introduction to our team, frequently asked questions ("When do you play?", "What does it cost?", "How do I join?", "What do I bring to practice?", etc...), directions and maps to our practice/game fields, and some great information about rugby as a sport and why you should play. This is helpful for newbies or vets who are interested in joining. To learn more about our team, read our team history, watch our videos, or check out some of our pictures. Better yet, just come out and meet us!

Step 2: For those of you who don't know a lick about rugby, DON'T WORRY. Prior experience is a plus, but most new players have never played the game before. If you've played another sport before, you'll find that many of the skills you've learned already will transfer over into rugby - we can teach you the rest. We have many resources online to help you learn the basics, but don't expect to fully understand it until you've been to a few practices and played in a few games.
For some basic terminology and explanation of game play, check out our Rugby Basics brochure or watch our Rugby 101 video. For further in-depth information, check out any of the links on the right-side of the page.

Step 3: Come out and play!! Anyone can come to a practice: see our Practice page for more information. If you have any questions, please contact Katy "Pi" Broerman (PR/Recruiting). You can also find contact info for our other team officers here.

Things you need to know:
  • You must possess medical insurance coverage of $100,000 or more. Playing any sport without insurance is not recommended.
  • You must become a member of USA Rugby. Current cost: $35. You must join prior to your first game.
  • You must pay dues each Spring and Fall season to Memphis WRFC. Current cost: $50. Social members pay only $25. You can set up a payment plan if needed.
  • You are responsible for providing your own black shorts for game day. Team socks will be available for purchase.
  • Soccer cleats are a good enough start for shoes. Ladies designated to play in the 'tight five' may wish to consider rugby boots.
  • Game day uniform shirts are provided by the club.
  • Tackling without a mouth guard is not advisable. You can pick one up at any store selling sporting goods.
  • See our Links page to find companies who sell rugby gear. Get at least one pair of rugby shorts for practices.
  • See our Practice page for information on other gear you will want for games and practices.
  • Memphis WRFC believes in respect for personal dignity. Hazing or discrimination are not tolerated.
